Christmas Break
Let's drive some more!
You would think, with me calling it “Christmas Break,” that there would be no more driving for awhile. Wrong! Places to go and people to see, c’mon! The wedding is fast approaching, and there was plenty to work on. We did get to register though, and that sure is fun! The store gives you a little zapper gun, and you run around picking out all of the neat things that you can’t afford on a med-student and ski bum salary. Which, really, is anything except food and a place to sleep.
After Christmas Ritu and I squeezed in a trip to Lake Tahoe for a couple days on the snow. Or, in search of snow. The first day we planned to go to Northstar; when we arrived, it was pouring rain! Not the most pleasant snowboarding weather. After a driving around for awhile, we ended up at Diamond Peak, a small local resort on the lake. No rain, and some of the runs were open. After getting warmed up on the lower runs, we headed on up to try a run off the top. That didn’t work out so well. The run off the stop was solid ice due to the 40-50 mph winds ripping up the slope. Any free snow (or even ice) turned into little projectiles ripping at your face. It was blowing ridiculously hard, and was not pleasant at all. Just getting down the run was an adventure. We spent that night hanging out with my cousin Margeaux and mowing down some tasty food. The next day the weather was much better and we ended up at Northstar with a few inches of fresh powder. Everything was great except for the 20 minute lift lines. I knew the Christmas-New Year’s week was crowded, but that was ridiculous. Is $10 per run worth it?
After New Year’s, Ritu and I headed on up to Seattle and Portland for her Residency interviews. I spent the days wandering around and checking out the local scene while she had six hour long interviews. I thought my half hour long job interviews were tough, but now I just feel like a pansy. We may end up in one of those cities, but those results don’t come out until March. Then it’s time to look for a job! After fondue date night (be careful when you order the big meal! Ritu had to roll me back to the hotel!) Ritu had to go back to San Diego to start another rotation and Nate and I were back on the road. It’s time for some serious skiing!
